THE HERE AND NOW

Dementia and Alzheimer’s are not a normal part of aging, and the numbers are on the rise. As these diseases progress, life enrichment professionals are faced with challenges to ensure everything they do is in the “here and now” with regards to their needs. Sometimes a resident may not remember your name, but they will recognize your face and that is important. There is a sense of trust that goes along with that, and it truly goes the extra mile in getting residents to partake in any activity. “I know that face; l I know that smile; I know I can trust you so I will go with you.” It is one of the many reasons why Moravian Village has been proactive in ensuring our life enrichment staff follow these residents throughout their lives, ensuring that familiar face will always be there for them through the thick and thin.

It is about routine: Getting this specific population into a routine every day is important. Some residents can wake up on their own, get dressed and know they must be at a certain place at the same time each day for a class. This is especially true for our residents who are still living independently with Alzheimer’s or Dementia. Some may not remember what they signed up for, but they know being there at that specific time will bring them joy.

It is about communication: Communication must be in the here and now. When a resident says, “I forget what class this is,” it’s easy for someone to say “Remember? you signed up for this every week” or “You come here all the time! It is your favorite class.” Even saying these responses in the friendliest tone can make these residents feel defeated. You do not want to test them; you want to be with them at that moment in time. Basic friendly replies such as “This is Zumba” or “This is a really exciting class on weaving” will lead to better communication. Some may not remember what you said to them just 10 minutes ago. Patience is key. Always respond as if it is the first time they are asking.
